About the Author

In the spirit of self-disclosure, my name is Hillary Manaster. I am a program manager on the Sanford Harmony Program (SHP) at Arizona State University, and I write this blog as an SHP representative, a parent, an educator and a prevention specialist.

I have a degree in psychology from the University of Michigan and a Master of Education in Risk and Prevention from Harvard. I began my teaching career as a Teach for America corps member, and I have spent over 12 years in elementary and middle schools,  teaching 1st and 2nd grades as well as working as a prevention specialist.  I have worked in inner-city schools (LA, Boston and Chicago) as well as in affluent neighborhoods (Ann Arbor and Phoenix areas) – always finding that my passion is for working with at-risk children, and always finding (no matter what the environment) that there are kids at-risk for school failure due to social, emotional, psychological or academic factors.

I believe all children deserve to feel successful in school, confident with peers, loved at home and proud to be themselves. I also believe that there are times when children need support in reaching these goals. Early intervention and prevention are so critical in helping our little ones be the best they can be, and it is work that is very close to my heart. I am therefore tremendously proud to be a part of the Sanford Harmony Program which is dedicated to improving the lives of boys and girls through early intervention and prevention. With a focus on bringing boys and girls together, the goal of both The Sanford Harmony Program and Superhero Princess is to enhance how boys and girls treat and think about each other, strengthening connections and laying the foundation for harmonious relationships in the future.

Hi Hillary; thanks for following my blog. I have been reading yours for a while and really appreciate your perspective. And we have a shared UM link, though I only worked there, and studied Psychology at “the other school” in MI. Glad to read your work and to have you as a reader.

Hi! I just found your comment on Scarymommy about Target and thought, did I write this and forgot? I’m also a Hillary M. Turns out we also both have undergrad degrees from UM, too. You could be my internet name twin! Looking forward to checking out your site.
